Hope Gardens Art Kids Workshop - The art of having FUN

My dear artists,

Saturday - September 4th, 2009 from 4pm to 6pm I am organizing an Art Kids Workshop at Hope Gardens in Sylmar, California.

Hope Gardens is a transitional home for homeless women and children living on the Skid Row.

These children are deprived of many things in life. They deserve to be loved, played with, and have fun in a peaceful environment. Many of them lived in abusive households before they ended up on the streets.

Over the past two decades, an alarming trend has emerged: women and children are increasingly finding themselves homeless and living on the streets of Los Angeles. When we heard the statistics of homeless women and children, our hearts sank. During a visit to Union Rescue Mission we were shocked and saddened to see the grim reality of families calling the filthy streets home. We deeply felt that the need for a bold solution was both obvious and urgent. The hard concrete world of downtown’s “Skid Row” is no place for children to spend their formative years.

"The art of having FUN" came to life with the belief that LA artists community can give 2 hours of their precious time to bring joy in the lives of homeless children.

I am going to need 5 artists who are willing to teach kids how to paint with watercolor and/ or how to do collage. Each artist will work with 3 to 5 children between age 5 and 10 years old. I, and my friend, James, who is also and artist, are preparing the lesson plan and will gather the art supplies. Hope Gardens will provide the facility where the art workshop will take place.

I am inviting you to join me in supporting this great cause.

If you are interested to participate in this event let me know by September 2nd, 2009.

Please email me at or call me at 310-634-4737 with questions, comments, or suggestions.

I would like to extend my thanks to Jill Gurr, the founder of "Create Now", a non profit organization whose work transforms the lives of high-risk and at-risk youth through creative arts mentoring, education, resources, and opportunities. Jill connected me with Hope Gardens and supports me in making this event a success.

Thank you,

Aurora Filipescu
